Humanitarian conditions in Myanmar have deteriorated for the people in greatest humanitarian need, most of them Rohingya Muslims, the UN's deputy emergency relief coordinator said on Tuesday at a press conference in New York.
She said UN estimates the 95 percent of all internal displacements in Rakhine area were suffered by the Muslim population.
“I have to say the conditions for Muslims in the IDP (internal displaced persons) camps were far worse. And the fundamental reason is that this people had very little freedom to move out of the camp," said Kyung-wha Kang.
She added that the people in camps were “very much confined to the camp and dependent upon assistance coming in for their very basic needs.”
In a news release issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) earlier in June, an estimated 421,000 people were “in urgent need of life-saving assistance” in Myanmar.
Kang said an improvement in the overall situation requires a ”change in culture,” including “the fundamental reconciliation between the Buddhist and Muslim communities.”
