The rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has claimed shooting down a Sudanese jet fighter in South Kordofan State.
"The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) plane was shot down in the Dalang town," the rebel movement said in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement, however, gave no details about casualties.
The Sudanese army has not confirmed the claim.
Since 2011, the SPLM-N has waged an active insurgency against the Khartoum government in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.
Outlawed by the central government, the movement consists mainly of fighters who sided with southern Sudan during the civil war, which ended with a 2005 peace treaty that opened the door to South Sudan's secession from Sudan six years later.
The two rivals concluded a sixth round of peace negotiations in Addis Ababa last May.
A source close to the talks earlier said that the two sides had agreed on 70 percent of the points presented for the negotiations.
