PRETORIA
Court proceedings in the case of South Africa's internationally recognized Paralympian Oscar Pistorius are set to deliver the sentence at the Pretoria high court early Monday.
Pistorius, dubbed "blade runner," was found guilty of culpable homicide in the killing of his model-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day of last year.
Presiding Judge Thokozile Masipa was widely criticized by both laymen and legal experts for being too lenient with the double-amputee athlete whom many hoped should have been found guilty of murder.
Pistorius is now likely to get a short jail sentence, correctional supervision at his home or even pay a fine for the crime, since he is a first-time offender and was remorseful during his trial.
The high-profile trial has been ongoing for six months and has heard testimonies from 37 witnesses.
Regardless of the sentence Pistorius would get, there will still be a divided opinion on matter throughout since he has both fans and critics, an Anadolu Agency correspondent said.
Activists advocating for women rights are expected to protest outside the Pretoria high court to show solidarity with Steenkamp's family.
