ANKARA (AA) - A senior Russian diplomat said Thursday his country was only delivering defense weapons to Syria, adding that Moscow "was not even thinking" of providing any offensive weapons to Syria.
Remarks by Mikhail Margelov, chairman of a parliamentary foreign affairs committee, came at a press conference after a meeting with Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Ze'ev Elkin in Moscow.
Israel has earlier said it would strike delivery of Russian S-300 missiles to Syria out of fear that the advanced weapons system could be used to hit Israeli targets.
"I underscored that Russia is not interested in fueling the fire in the Middle East and we are acting carefully when delivering weapons to the region. I stated that we do not provide any offensive weapons to the region in any way," Margelov told reporters.
