JUBA (AA) - Rebels in South Sudan killed at least 41 people and wounded 63 in a gun attack in Jonglei state, a regional official said Sunday.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by rebels loyal to militia leader David Yau Yau, supported by youth from his Murle tribe, acting governor of Jonglei Hussein Maar said.
The attackers were armed with heavy automatic weapons and shot indiscriminately, Maar added.
Some of the wounded are in critical condition and the number of casualties may increase.
Some of the wounded were airlifted to state capital Bor and to the country's central hospital in capital Jub by the UN mission in South Sudan.
Officials in South Sudan accuse Khartoum of supporting Yau Yau to block South Sudan's plans to build an oil pipeline through Ethiopia, charges denied by Sudan.
