Quantum computers are expected to become commercially available in the 2030s, driven by rapid advances including Google’s Willow processor, which a Turkish sector representative described as a “promising turning point in the scientific world.”

Murat Canturk, CEO of Turkish cloud infrastructure firm ComPro, told Anadolu that quantum technology will transform industries by solving problems traditional computers cannot approach, using principles such as superposition and quantum entanglement for applications in fluid dynamics, pharmaceutical research and next-generation materials.

Canturk said quantum systems can perform calculations in minutes that classical computers would need billions of years to complete.

“In aviation, quantum computers will enable the design of complex airflow models with perfect accuracy, from wing profiles to body aerodynamics, and it will reduce the time needed to design aircraft from years to months, while in smart drug and innovative material design, they will accelerate the discovery of new drugs and next-generation materials by modeling molecular interactions at the atomic level,” he said.

He said aviation and defense will benefit first. “Aerodynamic optimization, fuel efficiency calculations, and turbulence models will see a breakthrough, while the health care sector will see protein folding simulations and smart drug molecules.”

Canturk added that quantum computing will reshape data security. “In crypto security, quantum computing will enable quantum-resistant encryption algorithms to make it so that existing encryption keys can’t be decrypted,” he said.

He said global technology companies including Google, IBM, Microsoft and Amazon have invested billions into quantum research, while China and the US have allocated large public budgets to secure national advantages.

Canturk said that Google’s Willow chip, unveiled in December 2024, demonstrated the first verifiable quantum dominance using its “Quantum Echoes” algorithm last month.

“Willow can analyze molecular structures with calculations 13,000 times faster than supercomputers,” he said.

“This marks the beginning of a shift to quantum computing from the lab environment to real-world applications — Willow’s success is a strong sign that quantum computers will become widespread in the 2030s.”
