Qatar's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday announced that it would provide $40 million to support the education sector in the war-battered Gaza Strip.
The grant – to be made by "Education Above All," a Qatar-based international initiative that advocates for the child's right to quality education – will go towards rebuilding and reequipping schools destroyed or damaged during Israel's recent military onslaught on the coastal enclave.
The money will also be used to offer scholarships for Gazan students who want to pursue higher education, according to a statement by the Qatar Fund for Development, which is affiliated with the Foreign Ministry.
The statement added that the money would also be used to support vocational training for Gazans who work in the education and health sectors.
Israel's military offensive this summer, which ended on August 26, damaged or destroyed thousands of facilities, homes and government institutions across the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The offensive, which lasted for 51 days throughout July and August, left more than 2,160 Palestinians dead – the vast majority of them civilians – and more than 11,000 injured.
