Possible US serial killer confesses to killing 7 women

NEW YORK

The bodies of seven women have been found in the state of Indiana following the confession by the alleged killer, U.S. media reported.

The professed serial killer, identified as Darren Deon Vann, 43, was arrested at his Gary, Indiana, home and "is cooperating with police at the moment," Hammond Police Chief John Doughty told reporters Monday.

The bodies were reportedly found in the cities of Hammond and Gary in northwestern Indiana.

"Suspect Darren Deon Vann told officers he had 'messed up' by committing the crime in Hammond and was surprised by how quickly he was apprehended," Doughty said, adding that it was possible the investigation will lead to more victims.

The suspect, who admitted that he has been involved in criminal activities for 20 years, is reportedly a convicted sex offender in another state.

The murder spree made headlines after the body of the first victim was discovered Friday evening at a motel in Gary.

Vann described the victims and even accompanied police to the locations of the remains. That led to the discovery of the other bodies, Doughty said.

The murders have been ruled homicides, according to the coroner's office.
