Peruvian authorities on Monday opened a preliminary investigation to determinate liability for a fatal bus crash that killed nine people and injured 57 others.
The Public Prosecutor’s office confirmed six Peruvians, two Chileans and a Canadian were among the dead in the crash Sunday in Lima.
The double-decker owned by the Green Bus company plunged onto a hillside road while descending San Cristobal Hill, an attraction that gives passengers a panoramic view of Peru’s capital.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement the accident happened about 2 kilometers (1 mile) from the presidential palace and the bus likely had been speeding.
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski took to Twitter to convey his “deepest condolences” to the families of the victims.
‘’This unfortunate situation entices us all. I demand an investigation that identifies those responsible for this tragic accident, " he said.
Green Bus also expressed its "sincere" condolences to the relatives of the victims in a message Monday on Facebook.
Those found responsible for the accident could face charges that include homicide, exposure of people to danger and omission of functions.
