Palestinians bury remains of 2 deceased relatives returned by Israel

RAMALLAH

Hundreds of mourners on Monday attended a funeral near Bethlehem for two Palestinians killed in Israel more than a decade ago.

On Sunday, the remains of Ayat al-Akhras and Dawoud Abu Soy were handed over by Israeli authorities to their families for burial.

Abu Soy blew himself up in 2001 in Jerusalem, leaving a number of Israelis injured.

Al-Akhras, a Palestinian woman, blew herself up in Jerusalem the following year, killing at least three Israelis.

The remains of the two Palestinians were buried in a cemetery in Artas village southwest of the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Scores of Palestinians killed by Israeli troops during the Second Intifada (2000 - 2003) were buried by Israel in a mass cemetery in the Jordan Valley known as "the Numbers Graveyard" or the "Cemetery of Numbers."

In October, Israel's Supreme Court allowed Palestinian families to conduct DNA tests with the aim of identifying the bodies of deceased relatives buried in the mass grave.
