GAZA CITY

A Palestinian man from the Gaza Strip was killed in Iraq as he fought within the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant movement, Palestinian media said Saturday.

Gaza Strip resident Mumtaz al-Wahidi, 27, was killed on Saturday as he fought within ISIL in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh, some Palestinian news sites said.

Quoting some family sources, the sites added that al-Wahidi left the Gaza Strip several months ago before he called his family and told it that he was fighting within ISIL.

A number of Gaza residents were killed in the past months in battles between ISIL and Al-Nusra Front, one of several militant movements fighting against the regime in Syria.

There is not an accurate estimate of the number of Palestinians fighting in Syria.

ISIL is a militant organization that combines thousands of fighters from different countries, who say they are bent on establishing an Islamic caliphate, a system of political-religious rule that is centered around a caliph or a ruler.
