CAIRO
Joint UN and Arab League's Special Envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi on Sunday said that the only way for Assad to leave power was a political solution.
Brahimi met with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil al-Araby in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Sunday to discuss the Syrian crisis.
Speaking at a joint press conference with al-Araby in Cairo, Brahimi stressed that the situation in Syria was getting worse.
"50,000 Syrians died in incidents in Syria. Four million Syrians now live as refugees in various countries. Two million Syrians have to struggle against starvation and poverty," Brahimi noted.
"If the crisis in Syria does not get solved, then the whole world's peace would be under a threat. I am concerned that Syria may become a new Somalia," Brahimi also said.
Brahimi met with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the Syrian issue on Saturday.
Brahimi was in Syria on Wednesday where he met with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and several opposition figures.
