U.S. President Barack Obama said he is ‘deeply concerned’ by reports of Russian military movements inside Ukraine on Friday.
“We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside of Ukraine,” said Obama, while speaking at the White House.
He added: "The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine."
Reports have emerged from Ukraine’s Crimean region of increased Russian military maneuvering, which included armored vehicles and personnel. Russia docks part of its Black Sea Fleet at a naval base in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol.
Obama said that Russian military intervention in the country would be a ‘profound interference’ in Ukraine’s domestic affairs, and amount to a “clear violation of Russia's commitment to respect the independence and sovereignty and borders of Ukraine, and of international laws.”
