Magnitude-6.4 earthquake strikes northeast China
No casualties, damage reported from tremor that hit Linkou county at depth of 580 kilometers
BEIJING
A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck China’s northeastern Heilongjiang province Saturday, but no casualties or damage have been reported.
State news agency Xinhua cited the China Earthquake Networks Center as reporting that the tremor hit Linkou county in Mudanjiang city shortly after midnight at a depth of 580 kilometers (360 miles).
The United States Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the earthquake, which struck 42 kilometers (26 miles) northeast of Mudanjiang, at 5.7.
The China Daily reported residents of Linkou and nearby Mudanjiang as saying they had not felt any tremors.
In August 2014, at least 617 people died when a magnitude-6.5 quake struck southwestern Yunnan province.
Another southwestern province, Sichuan, suffered a massive magnitude-8.0 earthquake in May 2008 that left more than 80,000 dead or missing.
