Magnitude 5.4 quake shakes Japan’s Tokyo area
No tsunami alert issued after temblor strikes 41.0 kilometers northeast of capital at depth of 37.5 kilometers

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook Japan’s Tokyo area Monday night.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the temblor occurred 41.0 kilometers (25.5 miles) northeast of the capital at a depth of 37.5 kilometers.
The Japan Meteorological Agency registered the quake at a magnitude of 5.6, news broadcaster NHK reported, and no tsunami alert was issued.
Monday marked one month since the second of twin powerful earthquakes hit the country’s southwest, leaving a total of 49 people dead.
