KUWAIT
Kuwait's Amir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah on Wednesday announced Kuwait would provide financial assistance of 300 million USD for civil war-stricken Syrians.
The international aid conference held by the initiatives of United Nations and hosted by Kuwait, began in the Bayan Palace in Kuwait on Wednesday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kuwait's Amir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah thanked the UN for their efforts to organize the conference and emphasized the worsening conditions in the Syrian crisis became an issue threatening the security of the region.
Stating that over 60 thousand people lost their lives and over 600 thousand had to seek refuge in neighbor countries, al-Sabah said, "We appreciate the enormous humanitarian aid efforts of Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq."
"The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has to find a solution to the Syrian problem immediately. History will question the UNSC for its role in the Syrian tragedy" al-Sabah said.
Mentioning that they have provided 60 million USD to the Syrians until now, al-Sabah announced they would like to contribute further by donating USD 300 million.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also expressed his gratitude for the governments and people of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, and praised the work of the international humanitarian aid organizations.
Reminding that millions of Syrians were displaced and over two million children were in urgent need of aid, Ban Ki-moon said, "I ask myself, how many more are to lose their lives as the crisis continues? Stop the violence for the sake of humanity."
Emphasizing that they would not allow financial difficulties get in the way of the efforts, Ban Ki-moon stated everyone had to do their own part including governments, individuals, NGOs and private sector.
