Kosovo announces preliminary results of local elections
The country's elections authority did not provide detailed information on data on the results of the elections which were marred by a low turnout and an attack on a polling station in Kosovo's Serb-dominated north
The Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo -- the two biggest contenders of the elections -- won in four municipalities each as mayors in 24 others will be decided in the second round.
Kosovo's Central Election Commission said mayors were elected in the first round of voting in ten municipalities but it provided no further information which party won.
The election authority gave no information on the results of voting in four municipalities in Kosovo's Serb-dominated north where low turnout and reports of irregularities marked the election day.
In the town of Mitrovica, a group of masked men stormed a polling station and reportedly breaking ballot boxes and intimidating the elections staff.
Valdete Daka, head of Kosovo's election body, said ballots from the north were taken to a central counting station in Pristina.
"As you know, votes in the north are not counted in the voting places and therefore there are no results. They will be counted in the counting center," Daka said at a press conference.
Candidates from a Belgrade-backed civic initiative, "Srpska" will go to the second round of voting in the municipalities with a Serb majority in southern Kosovo.
The second round of local elections will be held on December 1.
