KARACHI, Pakistan
Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday said the attackers involved in a brazen attack on Karachi International Airport appeared to be foreigners.
"Attackers involved in attack on Karachi airport apparently look foreigners," Nisar said while addressing the parliament amid a hectic debate on the attack which killed killed 39 people, including 10 Taliban militants, on Sunday.
Although Nisar did not name the country of origin of the ten terrorists who were killed in a five-hour-long battle, military officials told media that the attackers were Uzbeks and Chechens.
Nisar said the attackers had planned to hijack a plane and to press the government for entertaining their demands.
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the main coalition of Taliban groups in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
TTP spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid said they carried out the attack in retaliation to military air strikes in their northwestern North Waziristan stronghold.
