Italian magazine: US spies listened to pope

ROME (AA) - An Italian magazine reported on Wednesday that a United States spy agency listened to Vatican phone calls, but Vatican said it was unaware of any such activity.

Among 46 million phone calls monitored by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) in Italy from December 10, 2012, to January 8, 2013, were conversations of the Vatican.

NSA categorised phone calls as leadership intentions, threats to the financial system, foreign policy objectives and human rights, according to Panorama magazine.

"We are not aware of anything on this issue and in any case we have no concerns about it," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said.

Last week, the German government confirmed that Chancellor Angela Merkel's cell phone had also been followed by American spies.
