JERUSALEM
An Israeli soldier was wounded by gunfire from Israel-occupied Golan Heights on Monday.
"An IDF [army] soldier was lightly injured by errant fire from Syria a short while ago," the Israeli army wrote on its Twitter account.
The army said that the soldier was evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
According to Yediot Aharonot newspaper, the Israeli army was investigating the incident given that no explosions were heard from the Syrian side of the border and there was no information regarding firefights in the area.
For almost four years, Syria has been ravaged by conflict between the ruling regime of President Bashar al-Assad and heavily armed opposition forces.
The Syrian Golan Heights were occupied by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
In 1981, the self-proclaimed Jewish state formally annexed the territory, which is inhabited by a small Syrian Druze community of roughly 20,000.
The international community has never recognized the move.
