Spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry Sayyid Abbas Irakci has said they rejected the claims of the foreign media that Iran would send military troops to Syria.
In a press conference, Irakci said, "We definitely reject the claims of the foreign media that Iran would send military troops to Syria. Syrian Government does not need any external help."
Pointing out that Iran's Syria policy had never changed, Irakci said, "We repeatedly stated that we want a political solution and we are against any foreign intervention in Syria."
The Independent said that a military decision had been taken in Iran, even before last week’s presidential election, to send a first contingent of 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against the largely Sunni rebellion that has cost almost 100,000 lives in just over two years.
