Nine eruptions from the 2,600 meter high Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province caused panic last Tuesday among citizens living in nearby villages, officials said. More than 19,000 people have been evacuated from villages 5 kilometers around the crater, determined as the danger zone.
Mount Sinabung has periodically erupted ashes and gas since September. The volcano became active again in 2010 after four centuries and killed two people. Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes and is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur.
