Palestinian Health Minister in Gaza, Mufid al-Muhallelati said that the new Hamas leader may be Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzouk.
Speaking to the Anadolu Agency (AA), al-Muhallelati reminded that Khaled Mashal would not be a candidate for Hamas leadership again.
"While we try to change Mashal's decision, we are also making efforts in searching for the new Hamas leader," al-Muhallelati noted.
"Like everyone, I do hope that Mashal continues in his post. If Mashal does not take a step back from his decision to step down, then Mousa Abu Marzouk is the closest name to Hamas leadership," al-Muhallelati stressed.
Marzouk is a senior member of Hamas.
