GAZA CITY
Palestinian resistance movement Hamas said Saturday that it had detained former spokesman Ayman Taha for committing "irregularities".
"Taha is being questioned about his behavior, abuse of power and profiteering," the Islamist group said in a statement.
The group, however, said that Taha's detention "has nothing to do with spying charges with enemies".
Hamas, however, gave no further details about the spokesman's detention.
This is the first time the Palestinian group speaks officially about Taha, who has not been seen in public for around a month now.
A former chief of Hamas' student wing, Taha was responsible for communicating with the Egyptian intelligence agency.
Taha's brother, Yasser, was a leading member of the Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm ofHamas. He was killed by Israel.
