Military is in ‘pursuit of 3 more alleged accomplices,’ government spokesman says
NAIROBI, Kenya
The Gambian government on Wednesday said that it has foiled a coup attempt by “some soldiers.”
In a statement, the government spokesman said that based on intelligence reports that some soldiers of the Gambian army were plotting to overthrow the elected government of President Adama Barrow, four soldiers were arrested in a “swift operation” conducted on Tuesday.
The statement noted that the detained soldiers are “currently helping the Military Police with their investigations.”
The military is in “pursuit of three more alleged accomplices,” it said.
“Citizens, residents and members of the diplomatic and consular corps are urged to carry on with their normal activities as the situation is under total control and there is no need to panic,” the statement added.
