The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) announced that the number of children in need of help in Syria increased four times compared to previous year due to extreme weather conditions and called for urgent help to speed up the process.
“According to UNICEF data, 5.5 million helpless children face harsh winter conditions. It is reported that the number of children who live in bad conditions and camps in war-torn Syria in last 3 years increased four times,” UNICEF spokesperson Marixie Mercadoi told Anadolu Agency.
“Over a million children were affected by the crisis in Syria in December of last year. 232 thousand children live in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. This number increased to 4.3 million in Syria, 1.2 million abroad at the end of the year,” Mercadoi said.
Noting that they acted rapidly to meet children’s needs as much as possible, Mercadoi stated that blankets, plastic covers, winter clothes and hygiene kits were distributed.
It is also reported that drainage systems were reinforced, wastes were taken out and concrete foundation was built to protect the below parts of tents and hot water pots were placed for families who are forced to live in tents.
