An US- based food supplier company, Husi, was accused of selling and using rotten meat by Shanghai food and drug administration on Monday, according to China official news agency.
Husi is a very well-known food company in Shanghai which supplies meat to popular international fast-food chains including McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut.
On Sunday, local media accused and reported the Husi Company of selling expired meat products. The Shanghai food and drug administration along with food experts began an investigation which revealed the company was using outdated beef and chicken meat which was processed, repackaged and resold.
The administration ordered the suspension of the company's operations and the removal of its productions from shelves across the city for the public's health and safety.
The global companies that Husi supplies said they halted using the company’s products, and several chains have begun their own investigation.
The scandal also caused strong comments being jostled on social media generating distrust in the hygiene standards within the food processing industry.
“Clean food cannot be found anymore." "Even global companies’ meat is not safe.” “Stores sell expired meat.” were among the few social media comments.
Last year, Chinese media reported that tests applied to one of the biggest Chinese fast-food brand Cingongfu's ice cubes showed they included 120 bacteria per millilitre - a rate of 900 bacteria per mililitre which means five times more than the bacteria ratio of standard toilet water.
According to China’s food safety regulations, a company can be fined ten times the price of the product that it is using or selling illegally.
