BRUSSELS
The European Commission granted €3.9 million on Sunday to help meet the urgent needs of over 180,000 Syrians who have fled to Turkey in recent weeks to escape fighting in the Syrian town of Kobani.
The European Commission said in a statement that this funding will help humanitarian organizations provide clean water, shelter and medicine to refugees, as well as ensure sanitation and food services.
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants have been attacking the town of Kobani, near the Turkish border, for the past three weeks.
This has caused the largest influx of Syrian refugees into Turkey since the beginning of the crisis over three years ago.
“This adds further to the impact of what is already the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time,” Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response said. “We are directing urgently needed funds to help the humanitarian organizations on the ground deal with the massive influx of refugees.”
The European Commission also clarified that this fund is part of the Commission’s €150 million humanitarian aid budget for the Syrian crisis in 2014.
