The evolution of China into a formidable world power would cause a major transition for the European Union (EU) and the international system, according a report by British think-tank Chatham House.
The world in 2030 will be more delicate as a result of the diffusion of power and rise of economic interdependence, the report titled "Empowering Europe’s Future: Governance, Power and Options for the EU in a Changing World" warned.
As the balance of power is changing around the world, the EU will face a major challenge in trying to lessen regional tensions, the report said.
“Faced with a volatile security context in East and South East Asia, the EU could develop its relationship with China,” the London based thin-tank added, “While enhancing engagement with other Asian countries, some of which have concluded or are negotiating free trade agreement with the EU.”
Meanwhile, the report noted that maritime security will be important as ninety percent of world trade is conducted by sea.
"A number of countries are extending their claims to maritime zones,” the report said, adding, "This has already contributed to resource disputes in maritime areas such as the South and East China Seas.”
The world will likely be faced with more countries which are reluctant to connect with the rest of the world due to increasing turbulence at their home countries, the report added.
