BRUSSELS
The European Union has called for Israelis and Palestinians to exercise maximum restraint and to return calm to Gaza.
The EU is in contact with both sides and is urging an immediate ceasefire, foreign policy spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told a news conference in Brussels on Monday.
“The safety and security of all civilians must be of paramount importance,” she said, adding that the Gaza issue will be discussed by the foreign affairs council next week.
For the past seven days Israel has waged a military campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas rocket attacks. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 187 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes and around 1,280 injured. No Israelis have been killed.
