An Egyptian policeman was shot dead at his home by suspected militants in the northern Sinai Peninsula on Thursday, the Interior Ministry said.
The policeman was killed after three militants stormed his home, the ministry said in a statement.
All three attackers were later killed in an exchange of fire with security forces as they tried to flee the scene, according to the ministry statement.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has seen a surge in violence against security personnel since the powerful military establishment unseated elected president Mohamed Morsi on July 3.
Within recent months, scores of policemen and soldiers have been killed in dozens of militant attacks, especially in the peninsula's volatile northeastern quadrant, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian army is currently carrying out the largest military operation to be seen on the peninsula since Egypt's 1973 war with Israel with the stated aim of combating "militancy and terrorism."
