The Chinese ice-breaker ship “Xue Long” and Russian Akademik Shokalskiy vessel have successfully broken free from ice on Tuesday.
Xue Long, meaning Ice Dragon in Chinese, was stranded in an attempt to rescue the Russian boat stuck since December 24. The ship managed to carry 52 passengers to the Australian ice-breaker Aurora Australis, but then became stuck itself.
The Chinese ice-breaker started its efforts to break free from the thick ice floes at 5 a.m. according to Beijing local time and became successful after around 13 hours.
Meanwhile, the Russian boat also broke free from where it got stuck after a crack on the floes appeared when the direction of the wind changed, British agency BBC reported.
