BEIJING
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has said that strategic cooperation between his country and the U.S. would help promote peace, development and prosperity within the region and around the world.
"We should respect each other as equals, accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns, develop our relations and achieve win-win situations in a more pragmatic and open manner," the Chinese premier said.
He said China was the largest developing economy in the world, and the U.S. was the largest developed economy, and said the two nations could build a new type of major-country relationship. He made the remarks Friday after meeting in Beijing with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
Calling for closer cooperation in energy, Li urged the U.S. to take steps regarding direct exports of liquefied natural gas to China and joint exploration of shale gas.
The Chinese premier also called for closer technological cooperation in halting climate change.
Kerry, who was making his second visit to China since taking office a year ago, said the U.S. would like to expand trade cooperation with China and push forward bilateral investment treaty negotiations.
He also emphasized the importance of of strengthening U.S.-China coordination on global issues such as climate change, and jointly safeguarding regional peace and stability.
Kerry is due to arrive in Jakarta later Saturday, after which he will visit Abu Dhabi, as he concludes his four-nation Asian tour. He began his trip in Seoul.
