SHANGHAI
China has urged dialogue for a political settlement on the Syrian issue, stressing the issue must be resolved through political means.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said there are five principles for an agreement “the future of Syria must be decided by its own people, an inclusive political process must be promoted, national reconciliation and unity must be achieved and humanitarian assistance must be delivered in Syria and its neighboring countries."
The foreign minister said the upcoming meeting in Geneva should focus on ongoing process marking the beginning of dialogue and negotiation. He went on to say "We call on all parties in Syria to make an effort for a political consensus."
The UN-backed talks scheduled to begin on Wednesday in Switzerland, is set to bring together representatives from the government of President Bashar al-Assad and the Western-backed political opposition.
