LAGOS, Nigeria

A joint operation of Nigerian and Cameroonian forces in the Kirawa junction of northeastern Nigeria's Borno state Monday has rescued 112 captives held by Boko Haram militants.

Nigerian army spokesman Sani Usman said in a statement Monday night that the captives included eight men, 36 women and 68 children, describing the rescue as a fruit of an ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and neighbors in the anti-Boko Haram fight.

"The cooperation with our neighbours has brought renewed vigour and is yielding fruitful result in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists," the statement added.

Usman added however that a Cameroonian officer died from an injury he sustained when his unit's vehicle ran into an explosive buried along the Pulka-Ngoshe road in the region.

Eight other Cameroonian troops were also injured in the incident.
