ISTANBUL
Syrian rebels are claiming that they are continuing the siege on Aleppo’s central prison and that Assad’s regime forces can only enter the prison’s southeastern part.
However, according to the official Syrian news agency, SANA, on Thursday, "Syrian army units have regained control over a site [Aleppo’s central prison] where a law-enforcement battalion is stationed north of the prison and tightened its grip on the adjacent areas, inflicting back-breaking losses on the armed groups".
Yet, Syrian activists announced on Friday that Syrian government forces ended a year-long siege in the Aleppo central prison and said that the SANA news agency’s claims did not reflect the truth.
The prison in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo has been at the center of a one and a half year battle between Bashar al-Assad regime troops and opposition forces.
