Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed their countries' commitment to strengthening strategic relations Monday.
“Our goal, our primary goal is to raise Azerbaijani-Iranian interstate relations to a higher level. For this reason, I repeat, appropriate instructions have been given, and I am confident that these instructions will be implemented,” Aliyev said at a joint press conference with Pezeshkian in Baku.
Aliyev emphasized the centuries-old friendship and brotherhood between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran, noting that the relationship between the two states continues to grow on the solid foundation.
“During our talks and exchange of views earlier today, we spoke about many important issues, expressed our views and further reaffirmed the strategic relations between Azerbaijan and Iran,” he said.
Aliyev highlighted Pezeshkian’s visit with a large delegation and the signing of multiple agreements as signs of goodwill and closer ties between the two nations.
He said the two leaders reviewed the North-South transport corridor project, which he said would benefit all participating countries.
“This project will bring great benefits to all the countries involved in it. Azerbaijan has implemented all the necessary infrastructure projects for the operation of this transport corridor on its territory. Currently, we are simply expanding our transport capabilities and infrastructure, taking into account the increased cargo volume.”
He also expressed his condolences for the casualties caused by a recent explosion and fire at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port.
Pezeshkian stressed the historical and kinship ties between the two peoples, saying "these deep bonds stand as a barrier against any efforts to create division between us."
He highlighted the partnerships between Iran and Azerbaijan, saying the two countries take pride in their ties and are committed to strengthening relations.
"We can share our experiences across various fields, benefit from each other's markets and develop regional connections."
He said Iran and Azerbaijan agreed to develop a comprehensive strategic cooperation plan which will pave the way for expanding scientific, cultural, economic and security cooperation.
The Iranian leader also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation between the two countries, saying that “through collaboration and mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and interests, Iran and Azerbaijan can build peace, stability and security in the region.”
