9 Thai army officers die in fiery helicopter crash

BANGKOK 

Nine Thai army officers died Monday evening when their helicopter crashed shortly after leaving an army camp in northern Thailand.

Army spokesperson Sirichan Ngathong confirmed to the Bangkok Post newspaper that none of those on board the chopper had survived. 

The helicopter was discovered in flames at 20.15 (15.15 Turkish time) in Phayao district, around 700 kilometers north of capital Bangkok. 

The newspaper reported that among the nine people dead were the Third Army’s deputy area commander Maj Gen Songpon Thongjeen. 

The helicopter was headed for an army base in the country's north.
