At least nine people were killed and 23 others injured in a car accident at an airport in China's southern Guangdong province, local media reported Monday.
According to police, a red sedan ran over several pedestrians near a terminal at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport at 3.32 p.m. (0732GMT) Sunday after its 24-year-old driver allegedly lost control when a honking car made her anxious.
State news agency Xinhua reported that five people were killed at the spot, with four others later losing their lives in hospital.
The injured were rushed to five hospitals, according to Shenzhen’s emergency center, and five remain in critical condition.
The driver has been taken in for questioning, and an initial investigation showed that around 30 people had been standing on a platform, watching planes take off and land and taking photographs, when the accident occurred.
While the platform is part of a driveway, witness Huang Jiangtao told Xinhua he had not known pedestrians were prohibited from the area as there were no warnings by signs or staff.
An airport spokesperson, however, said the area was patrolled by guards who regularly disperse people, adding that the airport would use warning signs and additional staff in the future.
