FALLUJAH, Iraq
Four people have been killed and 26 others injured in an army shelling of residential areas in the western Iraqi city of Fallujah, a tribal spokesman said.
"More than 40 mortar shells and artillery barrage hit the city since Thursday evening," Mohamed al-Begari told Anadolu Agency.
A spokesman of the Fallujah General Hospital said that two hospital personnel, including a Bangladeshi national, were injured when army forces shelled the hospital.
"The shelling has caused heavy damage in the hospital," Wessam al-Essawi told AA.
The Iraqi army is currently pursuing a major military operation in Iraq's restive Anbar province, of which Fallujah is a main city.
According to the government, the campaign aims to flush out militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group.
Local Sunni tribes opposed to the Shiite-dominated government, however, have reacted angrily to civilian causalities caused by the campaign.
