Three policemen were killed in the early hours of Monday when unknown militants opened fire at a police checkpoint in the Nile Delta province of Daqahliya, security sources told Anadolu Agency.
Masked armed people riding a motor bicycle gunned down the three policemen who were manning a checkpoint under the Mansoura University Bridge, the sources added.
The bodies of the victims were immediately taken to hospital.
According to the sources, the attackers, who fled the scene immediately after the attack, had not been identified yet.
No government official was immediately available for comment.
Egypt has seen a rising crescendo of violence following the army's July 3 ouster of the nation's first elected civilian president Mohamed Morsi and the security forces' violent dispersal of two pro-Morsi sit-ins on August 14.
