KARACHI, Pakistan
The death toll from a three-day long heatwave in Pakistan has shot up to 257, after nearly 100 more people died on Monday due to heatstroke and heat-related illnesses, hospital officials said.
The four major government hospitals in Karachi, where 200 have died in three days, have struggled to accommodate the number of patients, many of whom are arriving unconscious.
The heat spell is expected to break soon with the meteorological office forecasting rain in the coming days.
The heat has been made worse by extended power cuts, which come while many are fasting for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The power cuts caused water shortages in several cities with water pumping stations unable to operate without electricity.
