CAIRO
Twenty-one Egyptian border guards were killed in an exchange of fire with militants near Libyan border.
"A terrorist group attacked a border checkpoint near al-Farafra oasis, 100km south of Cairo," army spokesman Mohamed Samir wrote on his Facebook page.
He said border guards engaged in gunfight with the militants, leading to the explosion of an arms depot.
"At least 21 martyrs have fallen and four border guards injured in addition to the killing of some terrorist elements," the spokesman said.
Security sources earlier said that 20 border guards had been killed in gunfight with "traffickers".
