Two people were killed and 10 injured in an explosion Monday at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh in the US state of Pennsylvania, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Allegheny County officials said an incident at the Clairton plant left several people trapped under rubble and triggered a rescue operation, ABC News reported.

Of those 10 injured, five remain in critical but stable condition, while the other five were hospitalized, treated, and later released.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on X that his administration is coordinating with local officials responding to the explosion.

"We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident. I end every meeting and every message with the words, 'Let’s get back to work safely.' That commitment has never been more important, and we will honor it," David B. Burritt, the president and CEO of US Steel Corporation, said in a statement.

The Clairton plant is the largest coking operation in North America and a major component of US Steel's Pennsylvania facilities.
