At least 15 people were killed and more than 60 were wounded after a traffic accident in southeastern Kenya on Tuesday.

Commenting on the bus accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, Traffic Police Chief James Onyango told AA that the overspeeding might have led the accident.

"The injured have been taken to Makindu and Voi Hospitals; we are yet to establish the exact cause of the accident but we are investigating," said Onyango.

There are fears that the injured could not get the required emergency attention as doctors throughout Kenya have been on a strike which has lasted more than two weeks, paralyzing the hospital services in the country.

Hezron Kimari, a local resident, told AA "The accident scene is terrifying. It happened at night; so many of the passengers remained trapped in the wreckage of the buses for a long time before being helped".

The accident scene is an isolated stretch on the road, more than 320 km from Nairobi.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in accidents in Kenya since January, prompting the government to launch campaigns to reduce the road carnage, including the introduction of alcoblows.
