11 killed in karaoke bar fire in central China
Of 24 victims receiving treatment in hospital, 13 sustained serious injuries
BEIJING
At least 11 people were killed and another 24 wounded early Monday in a fire in China's central Henan Province, the country’s state news agency reported.
After the fire broke out at a karaoke bar in Changyuan County at around 12.20 a.m. (04.20 p.m. Sunday GMT), 35 people were taken to a nearby hospital, according to a statement from the county’s government cited by Xinhua.
While 11 people succumbed to their injuries, 13 of the 24 victims receiving treatment were seriously wounded.
Police have detained a legal representative of the venue, according to Xinhua, and Changyuan’s Party chief Bo Xuebin has ordered all karaoke bars to shut down and ensure safety measures.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze, which was extinguished 45 minutes later, remains ongoing.
