All of the Turkish dailies covered Erdogan's speech on building of an opera house, a mosque and a hotel instead of a mall in Taksim district of Istanbul, regarding the continuing demonstrations of Taksim's Gezi Park on Sunday. Erdogan noted the Ataturk Culture Center (AKM) in Taksim would be demolished and told that an opera house would be built in its stead. Daily TURKIYE and daily MILLIYET headlined Erdogan's statement of "we will build a mosque in Taksim, too", adding his remarks on "Topcu Kislasi" project saying that it was not certain that the AKM would be replaced by a mall but it would be a city museum as well. Daily SABAH headlined "Previous ten years are assurance of tomorrow" in an expression of Erdogan's speech, where he told that he would not get the permission from main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) to build an opera house and a mosque in Taksim.
Protests cost 20 million lira damage in Ankara and Istanbul
Turkish dailies also covered Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler's statement on Sunday about the cost of damage after the protests, which is 20 million liras according to the official figures. Daily HURRIYET headlined "Heavy loss" to describe the amount of damaged buses and cars, alongside number of people detained in protestors in five days. Daily VATAN reported a list of losses, telling that 1,730 people were detained, 115 policemen and 58 citizens were injured and 89 police vehicles, 42 private vehicles, 22 buses and 94 business places were damaged. Protestors in Taksim Square started a clean up, helping to tidy the park after the wreckage. Daily ZAMAN emphasized the contradiction between environmental awareness, which was the starting point of the protests and the wreckage left after five days with the headline "Environmental awareness transformed into devastation".
400 kg explosives confiscated at Syrian border
Several Turkish dailies covered confiscation of 400 kilograms of explosives near the Cilvegozu border gate in southern province of Hatay. Dissidents captured the explosives at Bab al-Hawa border gate, where the Syrian plated car was to pass from Syria into Turkey. Daily MILLIYET reported that security measures were intensified after the explosives were seized. Daily VATAN headlined "400 kg explosives at Syrian border gate" and stated the car was stopped at Bab al-Hawa, 4.5 kilometers from the Cilvegozu border gate by dissidents opposed to al-Assad regime. Daily CUMHURIYET used the same headline as daily VATAN, but added Erdogan's statements on Syrian refugees in the Reyhanli town of southern Turkey and the precautions taken against terrorism, he made Sunday on a TV programme.
