Turkish dailies on Monday extensively covered the 76th anniversary of the demise of Kemal Mustafa Ataturk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, who is commemorated on November 10 each year.

"You are always in our heart," said MILLIYET, referring to Ataturk who passed away at 9:05 a.m. on November 10, 1938. The paper said the main commemorations would take place in Anitkabir, Ataturk's mausoleum in Ankara.

Born in 1881 in Thessaloniki, in what was then the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk made his military reputation repelling the Allied invasion in Canakkale in 1915.

Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the World War I, Ataturk led the Turkish national movement in the Turkish War of Independence. Having established a provisional government in Ankara in 1921, he defeated  forces sent by the Allies. His successful military campaigns led to the liberation of the country and to the establishment of Turkey.

VATAN wrote: "We will continue to remember you."

The daily quoted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who issued a message for the day of remembrance: "I commemorate Ataturk with mercy and gratitude who built our republic by merging all the colors of this land."

"He enlightens our way," said HABERTURK. The paper reported that daily life would stop at 9:05 a.m. as people observed two minutes of silence.

In other news, Turkish dailies also covered celebrations in Germany marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"It is a wall of rose now," said HURRIYET, reporting that commemoration events drew more than 100,000 people to the site of the most enduring physical marker of the Cold War.

The Berlin Wall, which was also called the ‘Wall of Shame’, fell on November 9, 1989.

ZAMAN ran the headline: "Walls still separate 25 years after Berlin." The daily claimed that the world marked the 25th year since the fall of Berlin Wall but that there were barriers still being built across the world, including in the West Bank.
