Turkey’s 4G/LTE Communication System Development Project (ULAK) is expected to generate revenue of $5 billion for the Turkish economy, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.
During his keynote speech at the “4.5G IMT-Advanced Authorization Certificate" signing ceremony in Ankara, Erdogan said that now it is almost impossible to imagine a life without these telecommunication facilities and Turkey could not lag behind other countries.
“The upgrade of the mobile telecommunications network to 4.5G is expected to earn over $5 billion, contributing to our goal of becoming a technology producing country as well as an advanced consumer society.” Erdogan said.
Britain's Vodafone, Turkish Avea and Turkcell were winning operators of the 4.5G IMT-Advanced Certificate tender which took place in late August.
Erdogan said that the tender process for the upgrade to 4.5G mobile telecommunications network technology, which enables consumers to use faster wireless Internet connections, was, with his guidance, updated to include the establishment of infrastructure for 5th generation mobile networks before the tenders were arranged in August.
“Now we find it hard to imagine life without these devices and services. In this race, in which all countries proceed at full speed, lagging behind is out of question,” Erdogan said. These technologies are expected take a much larger space in our life with the prospect of using smart machines, smart cars, and digitally enhanced homes and cities.
“Of course, another important issue that excites me is the obligation imposed on operators to use local products, and procuring from the local companies carrying out research and development activities.” He added.
Based on present and future military and civilian (both public security and commercial) data communication requirements, the ULAK Project being carried out by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, Aselsan and Netas aims to design and develop, in Turkey, the software and hardware components of the 4th generation (4G) LTE communication System and to increase Turkey’s self sufficiency in this field.
