Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has been authorized to form a government following the Justice and Development (AK) Party’s Nov. 1 election victory, the party said Tuesday.
Speaking at a meeting of the Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK), the party’s decision-making body, in capital Ankara, spokesman Omer Celik said Davutoglu had received unanimous support from party members.
“As a matter of party regulations, the party chairman has been authorized by the MKYK,” Celik said. “As the AK Party gained the majority in the election to form a single-party government, Davutoglu, who will also be authorized by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is approved by the MKYK unanimously.”
The AK Party won 317 seats in the 550-seat Turkish parliament in a rerun of the June general election.
